Zimbabwe has further relaxed its COVID-19 restrictions as the number of new infections continues to decline.

HARARE,

Zimbabwe has further relaxed its COVID-19 restrictions as the number of new infections continues to decline. Addressing the nation in a televised speech on Monday, President Emmerson Mnangagwa said the number of COVID-19 positive cases, fatalities and hospitalization continue to steadily decrease.

"We must remain alert and on guard to maintain this positive momentum we have attained so far," Mnangagwa said. Under the new COVID-19 guidelines, industry and the informal sector can now reopen on the condition that they adhere to national COVID-19 guidelines. Without giving a timeline, Mnangagwa said schools and universities must now prepare to open although the government is still encouraging virtual learning.

An 8 PM to 6 AM curfew has been adjusted to 10 PM to 5 AM, while pubs and gyms remain closed. Funeral gatherings remain capped at no more than 30 people, while all other social gatherings now allow a maximum of 50 people. He said intercity travel can now resume, but bus operators must ensure all protective measures are enforced.

"Non-compliance in this regard will attract targeted closures of such entities," Mnangagwa said. In addition, he said apart from the 200,000 COVID-19 vaccines donated by China last month, more vaccines will be received in the country. "I want to once again reassure the nation that more vaccines are coming, and people will have the opportunity to be vaccinated.

"As the government, we are pleased with the response from the targeted groups, the overwhelming number of inquiries from those outside the first phase target group is encouraging as they indicate their desire to be vaccinated," he said.
