The Shey-Phoksundo National Park in Nepal has recorded a population of 90 snow leopards, according to a survey conducted by government agencies and conservation partner WWF Nepal. The survey used camera traps and revealed a population density of 2.2 snow leopards per 100 sq km. This is the first time a rigorous and scientific survey has been conducted in the park.
Snow leopards are a vulnerable species and face threats from wildlife crime, retributive killing, and climate change impacts on their habitats. The WWF Nepal said that the emerging figures are a testament to Nepal's mountain community's stewardship for snow leopard conservation and decades of investments in research and monitoring, human-wildlife conflict management, anti-poaching efforts, and habitat management.
The WWF Nepal emphasized the importance of continuing holistic conservation efforts to ensure the communities and the snow leopards thrive together in the region, and managing a human-snow leopard interface should be a priority._Rss
