A conservation pond has been constructed in the community forest connected to the East-West Highway in Nawalpur, Nawalparasi (East of Bardghat Susta).
Under the Narayangaht-Butwal road expansion project, a budget has been made available for the construction of ponds in the forest along the highway. A budget has been provided to protect biodiversity as compensation for community forests where trees were cut down during road expansion.
According to Hariprasad Gautam, Information Officer of the Division Forest Office Nawalpur, 27 community forests connected to the highway were asked to submit a plan to protect biological diversity.
In the beginning, the organization studied which areas would be affected by cutting trees.
Out of the 27 community forests on the highway, 26 community forests submitted a plan to construct a conservation pond and one community forest submitted a plan to install wire mesh with a mesh wall. Rs 3 lakh has been provided to each community forest. Seven community forests have completed the construction of ponds. The work of laying wire mesh with mesh wall has also been completed.
The conservation pond construction is underway in the remaining 19 community forests. All the rest can be completed within two months. According to the plan to build ponds, some constructions have been completed, some are in the process of constructing ponds in the forest.
According to the project, during the Narayangaht-Butwal road expansion project, a biological route will also be constructed in the forest area for wildlife crossing. According to the project, the culverts and bridges made for water drainage will be constructed in such a way that wild animals can cross. About 36,000 trees have been cut during the Narayangaht-Butwal road expansion project.
"The study showed that wildlife and the environment will be affected. Keeping this in mind, we asked for a plan from the community forest to do environment-friendly, wildlife-friendly work under biodiversity protection, and many submitted a plan to build a conservation pond. The same thing has happened now." Said Hariprasad Gautam._Rss
