The K2, or Chhogori, the world's second-tallest peak with the height of 8,611 metres was succesfully climbed by a team of 10 mountaineers led by Nirmal Purja on January 16. Other members of the team included Mingma David Sherpa, Gelje Sherpa, Sona Sherpa, Mingma Tenzi Sherpa, Pem Chhiri Sherpa, Dawa Temba Sherpa, Kili Pemba Sherpa, and Dawa Tenjing Sherpa. All the members of the team have now become heroes in the world's mountaineering community.
For the Grand success, the team was welcomed by the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) in a heroic way.
Responding to media persons, the leader of the 10-member Nepali team, Nirmal Purja, aka Nims Dai, expressed his pleasure that not only he but the whole team worked hard at the same level to make the ascent successful. “We all took a big risk with our lives. We felt like it has to be justice for every team member,” said Purja, adding, “Sherpas are not only supporting staff, they are always the leaders of thousanders,” Nims Dai said.
‘This expedition has raised the status of Nepali climbers to a new height, which is an achievement for all the mountaineers and shows that there is nothing that we cannot achieve if we attempt,” said Mingma Sherpa, the organizer of the expedition. The welcome ceremony and felicitation programme was organised with the participation of the Department of Tourism, Nepal Tourism Board, Nepal Mountaineering Association and other tourism organisations.
After that the entire team and crew members followed by a motorcycle rally headed towards Baluwatar to be honored by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli at a special event.
Prime Minister Oli said that the climbers had introduced Nepali adventurers to the world by successfully climbing the difficult Ketu Himal. He said that climbing a mountain is not easy as it is not possible to climb a mountain without adequate physical and mental strength.
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli presented letters of appreciation to all of the team members. As climber Sona Sherpa was still in the process of climbing in Pakistan, her certificate was handed over to her assistant.
On the occasion, Prime Minister Oli was handed over the national flag of Nepal by the climbers which they had with them during the summit of Ketu Himal.
