Himalaya Airlines proudly announces the commencement of its inaugural Kathmandu-Shanghai-Kathmandu flight service on December 2, 2023. This significant milestone reflects the airline's commitment to bolstering connectivity and fostering bilateral ties between Nepal and China.
The new route provides a seamless travel experience between the capital city of Nepal and the central coastal city of China, renowned as a global financial hub. Himalaya Airlines aims to deliver convenient, safe, and efficient travel options for passengers.
The maiden outbound flight, H9 780, departed from Tribhuvan International Airport at 09:50 local time, reaching Shanghai Pudong International Airport at 16:31 local time, with a flight duration of 4 hours and 7 minutes. The inaugural flight carried 137 passengers, marking the beginning of a weekly service every Saturday, expanding to twice a week (Saturdays and Wednesdays) from December 20, 2023.
This new route represents the third direct connection between China and Nepal, complementing the existing flight operations to Beijing and Qingdao. The inaugural flight event was honored by Mr. Xie Yu, Economic and Commercial Counsellor of the People’s Republic of China to Nepal, as the chief guest, along with other dignitaries.
Mr. Vijay Shrestha, President of Himalaya Airlines, emphasized the longstanding aviation history shared by Nepal and China, spanning two decades. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Himalaya Airlines is actively working to restore and increase flight frequencies to various destinations in China.
Highlighting the tourism aspect, Mr. Shrestha mentioned the airline's plans to expand destinations, including Chongqing and Lhasa, with Lhasa becoming a historical flight connection between Nepal and China.
Mr. Pratap Babu Tiwari, General Manager of Tribhuvan International Airport, congratulated Himalaya Airlines on the inaugural flight to Shanghai, recognizing the airline's commitment to providing outstanding service and connecting passengers with new and diverse experiences. He expressed excitement about the airline's success in reaching a vibrant global market hub.
Mr. Xie Yu, in his address, extended congratulations to Himalaya Airlines, emphasizing the significance of expanding the network to Shanghai, a crucial city for technology and manufacturing. He commended the airline for its efforts during the COVID-19 period, including the repatriation of citizens and the transporting of vaccines.
