Elephant kills a man in Jhapa

A pair of elephants from nearby Ratuwamai Tree Plantation Project entered the settlement at around 2:00 am today.

A man was killed in an elephant attack in the early hours today. The Area Police Office, Damak has identified the deceased as Rohit Regmi,58, of Tukre of Kamal rural municipality-5, Jhapa.

According to inspector of police Bhawan Babu Khadka, a pair of elephants from nearby Ratuwamai Tree Plantation Project entered the settlement at around 2:00 am today to pull apart the hut where the Regmi family was residing in. Though Regmi tried to escape the tragedy by running away, the animal followed him until to trample him leaving dead.

However, the victim’s spouse and a grand daughter managed to save their lives by fleeing. The Regmi family built a hut on a piece of land belonging to the Armed Police Force. Kamal rural municipality-5 ward chair Dambar Bahadur Niraula said later the locals chased away the animals back to the jungle. Elephant menace is frequent in this area.
