On the eve of the COP27 U.N. climate conference in Egypt, hundreds of climate activists on Saturday prevented private jets from departing Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport.

Greenpeace and Extinction Rebellion protesters sat around private jets to prevent them from leaving and others rode bicycles around the planes.

The annual United Nations climate talks, which begin on Sunday in the Red Sea resort of Sharm, el-Sheikh, will feature more than 120 world leaders.

At the Nov. 6-18 talks, difficult topics will be discussed, such as further reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing financial aid for developing nations dealing with the effect of climate change.

“The activists want fewer flights, more trains, and a ban on unnecessary short-haul flights and private jets,” said Dewi Zloch of Greenpeace Netherlands.

"The airport is targeting “emissions-free airports by 2030 and net climate-neutral aviation by 2050. And we have a duty to lead the way in that,” but conceded it needed to happen faster." said Schiphol’s new CEO Ruud Sondag

“They arrested a number of protesters for being on the airport grounds without authorisation,” said Military police._AP news
