Perched atop a serene ridge in Kavrepalanchok, the Palanchowk Bhagawati Temple is one of Nepal’s most revered shakta pilgrimage sites. Blending ancient artistry, living ritual, and sweeping mountain vistas, the temple offers a deeply immersive cultural experience just a few hours from Kathmandu. For devotees, it is a place of divine power; for travellers, it is a journey into Nepal’s layered spiritual landscape.
The temple enshrines Bhagawati, a powerful manifestation of Durga, revered as Adi Shakti: the primordial cosmic energy. The stone idol, believed to date back to the Lichhavi period, depicts the goddess in her Mahishasuramardini form, symbolising the triumph of divine wisdom over ignorance.
Carved from a single block of dark stone, the figure presents a striking multi-armed form (eighteen arms), each associated with symbolic weapons and ritual objects. Devotees visit seeking blessings for protection, prosperity, and family well-being.
While the idol is considered ancient, the present structure of the temple reflects later reconstructions, likely from the Malla period onwards. Built in the traditional pagoda style, the temple rises in tiered roofs supported by intricately carved wooden struts and brickwork.
Set against a dramatic hilltop backdrop, the courtyard opens to expansive views of the surrounding hills and distant Himalayan ranges, including Langtang Himal and Ganesh Himal on clear days.
Local folklore adds a haunting dimension to the temple’s history. It is said that a master artisan was commissioned to create the goddess’s extraordinary image. Upon completing the work, the ruler, determined to preserve its uniqueness, ordered that the sculptor be prevented from ever replicating such beauty again.
Though unverified, this story endures in local memory, echoing broader South Asian traditions where artistic brilliance is entwined with sacrifice. Today, it serves less as historical fact and more as a cultural narrative reflecting themes of power, devotion, and legacy.

Situated around 55 km east of Kathmandu, the temple rests at an altitude of approximately 1,560 metres. The journey passes through terraced farmland, forested hills, and traditional settlements, offering a glimpse into rural life in Kavre.
On clear mornings, visitors are rewarded with distant Himalayan views stretching across the northern horizon.
