Residents of Manang district have started their annual journey to the highlands to collect yarsagumba (Ophiocordyceps sinesis), a valuable medicinal herb. The yarsa picking season typically runs from May until the third week of June, and local people have headed to areas such as Namke Kharka, Khangsarkharka, and Narphukharka in Upper Manang to collect the herb. For many locals, agriculture and herb collection are important sources of income.
Yarsa collectors need to obtain permission from the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAAP) unit office in Manang, and arrangements are in place to ensure their security. Collectors from outside the district also come to Manang for yarsa collection.
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, possession of a vaccination card is mandatory for yarsa and other herb collectors and suppliers from outside the district. The collection of yarsa has already begun in Namke alpine, and is permitted in Narfu and Khangsar of Upper Manang._Rss
