The custom of lighting the fire in Deuthan and taking it home has been going on for generations

Tharu community of Shuklaphanta Municipality-3 Pipladi is busy lighting fire in the Deuthan of the village on the occasion of the Holi festival.

On the occasion of Holi, the fire made from Ganyari wood is lit in the hearth of the house and is not allowed to go out for the whole year. It is believed that if the fire inside during Holi is heated, it will bring happiness and peace to the house and diseases will disappear. The custom of lighting the fire in Deuthan and taking it home has been going on for generations, locals have been keeping it alive.

At the place where the simal branch is buried, it is wrapped with mustard stalks and other things and kept in a big mound. Guruwa of Tharu village, Vadgharia, after worshiping with roti and jaggery cooked in oil, lights a lamp and sets fire to that thump after circumambulation. The fire is lit in the southern part of the village.

People who came to light the fire put out the fire left on the road while walking. The fires are extinguished on the road so that there are no incidents such as fire. During Holi, the fire is also known as Sagun. The next day after Holi is lit, the women of the village take water in a bucket and extinguish the fire in that place with Bharni (a type of broom) and clean it. After the women return home, Holi is celebrated with fun and coloring in Holi.

“It is a custom to share and accept all the people who brought bread and good fire as Prasad,” said Ward president, Narendra Prasad Chaudhary.
