Sankata Mandir: believed to ward off bad luck and sickness

One of the most peculiar things about the Sankata temple is that Hindus worship the deity as Sankata, the goddess, and Buddhists worship the deity as God Bhairav.

Sankata temple, built by King Gunakama Dev, is located in Te Bahal, Kathmandu. Sankata is a popular goddess who is worshipped, primarily on Saturdays and on the days of birthdays. It is a prevalent belief that devotion to Sankata will fend off problems and negative omens from one's life. The statue of the Sankata deity is draped in cloth, wrapped all over her body except for the head.

One of the most peculiar things about the Sankata temple is that Hindus worship the deity as Sankata, the goddess, and Buddhists worship the deity as God Bhairav. It is also believed that neither the priest nor the statue of the goddess must be touched by the devotees.

The temple's Buddhist Gubhaju of the Newar Bajracharya clan worships the goddess in a sacred pitcher along with another pitcher for Yogini at the Katuwal Daha in Chobhar, and the goddesses are subsequently enshrined in the temple.
