As a kid growing up in Kathmandu, every year we would go to Chitwan and spend time in the family farm house. There we’d ride the elephant, take the jeep safari and enjoy the Tharu Cultural shows. So when I was invited by Temple Tiger Green Jungle Resort, I didn't think twice.
Located further away from the popular tourist area of Saurahas this green jungle resort is where you can enjoy an experience like no other. The drive to the resort will take you through local Tharu villages with their ochre colored mud houses and thatched roofs.
Where do I start with the room? Well I wouldn’t just call it a room. It was a small hut on stilts with twin sharing and an attached bathroom. The rooms were very well kept and theair conditioning made sure we wouldn’t be cold at night. The beds also had bed warmers and in the evening the staff brought hot water bags. As far the accommodation goes, I think it was as good as any 5 star hotel in the country.
The staff were absolutely lovely. Good manners, well informed and very well versed in both Nepali and English. Upon arrival, they greeted us with a welcome drink, which was followed by the briefing about what to expect during our stay there. Early mornings, they also gave us the traditional knock on the door wake up calls which came with tea/coffee and biscuits.
They take you on pleasing experience. Its starts with an elephant safari that takes you along the grass lands and into the riverine forest. It’s a nice chance to catch the animals in their natural habitat. Here you’ll find a lot of rhinos and various other mammals.
There is also boat ride which takes you down the Narayani river and provides an opportunity to view Gharial crocodiles as well as marsh mugger crocodiles along with a variety of water birds. You could also take a jeep ride which takes you deep into the jungle and into Temple Tiger’s old resort premises which is inside the national park. There you’ll be provided lunch and will be briefed by the resorts senior naturalist about elephants. If you’re interested to know more about the national park a slide show presentation is also available about the flora and fauna in the jungle which is followed by a cultural show by the local Tharu children.
The food was simple but very delicious. The breakfast had toast, eggs, cereals, bacon and sausage along with beans and mushrooms. The buffet lunch has traditional Nepali dal-bhat accompanied by a choice of chicken and mutton with season vegetables. Dinner was similar too but they sometimes do a goat barbeque which is absolutely mind boggling. What’s great about the food is it's all locally produced. From vegetables to the meat it’s all from their farm beside the resort. “We don’t put prawns on sticks and cook it in different type of sauce. What we do provide is fresh food straight out of our farm that you can see outside”, said Mr Raunak Malla Marketing Head.
Overall Temple Tiger Green Jungle Resort will give you more than just wildlife tourism. It’ll give you an experience to take back and talk about for years to come. From using old lanterns as light bulbs to the small huts on stilts it all fits in. After all it’s not just a vacation but an endeavor.
