Bigu Gompa: A Hidden Himalayan Sanctuary of Peace and Spirituality

26, Oct 2026 | nepaltraveller.com

Perched on a peaceful hillside in Dolakha, Bigu Gompa offers a remarkable journey into Buddhist traditions, breathtaking Himalayan landscapes, and the simple beauty of rural Nepal.

Hidden among the tranquil hills of Dolakha district, Bigu Gompa, also known as Tashi Chime Gatsel Gumba, is one of Nepal’s lesser-explored spiritual destinations. Situated at approximately 2,560 metres above sea level, this historic Buddhist nunnery offers visitors a peaceful escape from busy city life. Surrounded by lush forests, traditional villages, and magnificent Himalayan scenery, Bigu Gompa combines spirituality, cultural heritage, and natural beauty.

A Monastery Rooted in History and Legend

The history of Bigu Gompa dates back to the early 1930s, when Lama Sherap Dorje established the monastery following a request from Buddhist practitioner Nyima Pasang Sherpa. According to local legend, the lama performed a sacred ritual that miraculously brought forth a natural spring, which is believed to flow even today.

Another fascinating legend tells of the lama's vision of mysterious handprints and footprints on a mountainside, believed to signify the presence of Zambala, the Buddhist deity associated with wealth and prosperity. This sacred vision inspired the establishment of the monastery.

Although the devastating 2015 earthquake severely damaged the monastery, reconstruction efforts have helped restore its spiritual significance and welcome visitors once again.

A Living Centre of Buddhist Spirituality

Unlike conventional tourist attractions, Bigu Gompa offers an opportunity to experience Buddhist monastic life. Home to a community of Buddhist nuns, the monastery preserves centuries-old traditions through daily prayers, meditation, and religious teachings.

The monastery is particularly significant for its collection of approximately 1,000 Chenrezig statues, representing compassion in Buddhist tradition. Visitors may witness morning chanting ceremonies, explore sacred prayer wheels, and experience the peaceful atmosphere that makes this monastery special.

A Journey Through Nature and Culture

Reaching Bigu Gompa is an adventure in itself. Travellers can journey from Kathmandu through Charikot or Singati before continuing towards Bigu, depending on road conditions.

For trekking enthusiasts, a scenic route passes through traditional Tamang and Sherpa settlements, rhododendron forests, terraced fields, and quiet mountain trails. The surrounding landscape offers spectacular glimpses of Gaurishankar and other Himalayan peaks.

Local homestays provide opportunities to experience traditional hospitality, authentic village cuisine, and the everyday lifestyles of mountain communities.

Best Time to Visit Bigu Gompa

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are ideal for visiting Bigu Gompa. Spring brings blooming rhododendrons and pleasant weather, while autumn offers clearer mountain views. Winter provides a quieter experience, although temperatures can become considerably colder.

Bigu Gompa is more than a monastery or trekking destination. It is a place where spirituality, Himalayan beauty, and local traditions come together, offering travellers a meaningful journey into one of Nepal’s hidden cultural treasures.
