With WTTC, UNWTO and other international organizations saying that border closures have been ineffective against the spread of the variants of COVID-19, the new research has shown the depth of ineffective travel restrictions have cost the island nation

According to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), it has blamed the UK's strict yet ineffective travel restrictions against Omicron to cost the British economy £7 billion in lost tourism income. With WTTC, UNWTO and other international organizations saying that border closures have been ineffective against the spread of the variants of COVID-19, the new research has shown the depth of ineffective travel restrictions have cost the island nation.

In total, research by WTTC has shown that the global contribution by the travel and tourism industry to the global economy has decreased by an estimate of £26 billion through ineffective means of pandemic control. The organization has commented that the UK's 'attack on tourism' has been 'devastating for the sector' and urges the UK government to keep the borders open for the battered and bruised sectors to recover from the effects of the pandemic.
