As Tihar approaches,the demand for pala is extremely high, potters have postponed making other vessels at this time. The work of making other dishes has been put on hold because there is demand from outside districts for Lakshmi Puja during Tihar.
Now, not only the Prajapati of Bhaktapur Talqua but also the potters of Sujmari, Liwali, Tumucho, Chamhasingh, Suryavinayak and Chundevi are engrossed in making pala while taking care of other pottery making.
Since Tihar is a festival to worship Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, there is a tradition of lighting lamps during Tihar to bring Lakshmi into the home. On the day of Lakshmi Puja, there is a tradition of flickering pala diyo bali at the door, window, door, balcony and other places of the house.In recent times, the demand for electric lights during Tihar is also high.
The wholesale traders determine the price according to the size of the pala and take some profit from it and distribute it to the consumers through the retailers of various places in Kathmandu Valley. The pala prepared in the village by the potters of Bhaktapur, Banepa of Kavre, Dhulikhel, Panauti, Trishuli of Nuwakot as well as traders from Pokhara, Hetauda, Chitwan also come to get it.
“The demand for pala increases every year during Tihar, because it is a tradition to light lamps in Tihar. There was a trend of lighting candles a few years ago, but the demand for candles has increased since they are not as safe as lamps.” Said Ramprasad Prajapati, Businessman.
“Pala is considered very good and best from the point of view of safety among various modern electric flickering lights and candles, so the demand for it has increased in the market”, he added._Rss
