Siraha desperately needs personal protective equipment

Most health facilities in the district are unable to render services at full strength owing to the shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) meant for health workers.

The treatment services in health facilities have been hampered due to a dearth of PPEs, face masks and gloves which are required for health workers in the treatment of infectious diseases. When the country is trying to control the spread of coronavirus which has already spread globally, medical workers in the district are desperate need of safety equipment. According to Lahan Hospital, Medical Superintendent, Dr Sunil Kumar Kushawaha, ''They fear going close to patients of other diseases and suspected COVID-19 patients. We have asked the state government for equipment and hope the supplies will be made soon.''

The hospital has, however, readied a five-bed isolation ward in view of the heightened risk of the spread of coronavirus. The Siraha District Hospital also does not have PPE or gloves at this moment.

The protective equipment is essential for the safety of both medical workers and patients. The situation is the same with private health facilities. Despite the lack of protective gear, five hospitals in the district have established isolation rooms to treat coronavirus suspects. The isolation wards have been set up at Dhangadhimai municipality-based Mahedra Genai Hospital, RK Medicity Hospital of the same locality, Siraha District Hospital, Lahan-based Uma Prasad Memorial Hospital, and Kajarnha-based Phulkumari Memorial Hospital. But, none of them have ventilators.
