The Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) has upgraded Trekking Information Management System (TIMS) processes to enhance the safety and security of visitors trekking in protected areas in Nepal’s highlands. The new regulation requires all trekkers to use the services of approved trekking agencies registered with the Nepalese government. The new provision will take effect after March 31, 2023.
Following a series of discussions with trekking and expedition stakeholders and appropriate trade unions in Nepal, the decision was made to help prevent undesirable incidences such as being lost en-route, health concerns and/or natural disasters, and so on. With its implementation, hikers will have rapid access to a professional support system, which will aid in handling the problems of rescue operations in the event of an emergency.
Aside from safety, the new provision would create jobs in Nepal’s tourism sector and deter unlawful trekking operations in the country.
The TIMS Card change has been reduced to NPR 1000.00 for SAARC citizens and NPR 2000.00 for the rest of the world. The arrangement for Diplomatic Missions in Nepal will stay the same; accompanied by a qualified guide will be required.
Specific rules for the same will be published shortly, and NTB is confident that this step will pave the way for sustainable, responsible, and eco-friendly tourism in Nepal’s Himalayan area.
