Prisoners produce masks to cater to current need

Seven prisoners in the regional prison at the Bhimfedi Rural Municipality of Makwanpur District have begun producing face masks that are in high demand in the wake of COVID-19 spread.

According to the prison administration, the team produces 200 to 300 masks on average on a day. These masks which can be used as protective gear to fend off COVID-19 infection will be sent to Hetauda and Kathmandu, said Chief Jailor Prakash Khanal. Such masks cost Rs 30 to Rs 50 per piece in the market but the prison here will sell them for Rs 20 per piece.

If the prison receives purchase orders for these cloth masks, the inmates involved in making the masks said that they could supply up to 1,000 pieces of masks on a daily basis.
