India's Tamil Nadu has extended the ongoing COVID-19 lockdown until June 7, officials said Saturday.

India's Tamil Nadu has extended the ongoing COVID-19 lockdown until June 7, officials said Saturday. The lockdown in Kerala, however, has been extended until June 9. In Tamil Nadu lockdown period was to end on May 31 but Chief Minister M K Stalin extended it for one more week until 6:00 a.m. local time on June 7.

"Public should avoid crowds and stepping out of their homes. I request you to follow COVID-19 norms and seek medical help if you experience symptoms," the chief minister appealed in a statement. The state government has also constituted a special task force to tackle mucormycosis.

According to federal health ministry details on Saturday morning, Tamil Nadu on Friday recorded 31,079 new COVID-19 cases and 486 related deaths. The Kerala government on Saturday announced that the COVID-19 lockdown has been extended till June 9 to contain the spread of infection. The government took the decision as the ongoing lockdown was supposed to end on Sunday.

Kerala recorded 22,318 new COVID-19 cases and 194 related deaths on Friday.
