India's premier health institute, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi Monday started the screening of children for the clinical trials of Covaxin, the country's first indigenously developed COVID-19 vaccine, hospital officials said.

The trials began among children aged between two and 18. "Today the screening of children for conducting the trial of Covaxin has started," an official at the Centre for Community Medicine, AIIMS said. "Participants would be given the vaccine after their screening reports are received."

India's drug regulator granted permission for conducting the Phase II/III clinical trials of Covaxin in the age group of two to 18 years last month.

Reports said the trial on children has already started at AIIMS Patna in the eastern Indian state of Bihar to see if Covaxin was suitable for children.
