All flights out of Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, have been grounded following the discovery of five new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, Greenlandic authorities revealed during a press conference late Tuesday afternoon.
"A mass infection detection is underway, and it is serious. But we are calm about the national doctor's recommendation, and we are ready for stricter restrictions if it comes to that," said Asii Chemnitz Narup, Minister for Finance and Home Affairs of Greenland. The authorities have also extended the travel restrictions to ships meant to depart from Nuuk.
Less than a month ago, Nuuk shut down for almost four days due to the spread of infection when bars, restaurants and sports halls closed to contain the outbreaks. In total, 49 cases of COVID-19 infections have been reported in Greenland, with no deaths, according to the updated figures on the government website Tuesday.
To date, 21,179 people, or 37.32 percent of the population, have received at least a first shot of a coronavirus vaccine, and 9,409 of them are fully vaccinated.
