Ritualistic prayer and worship were performed at the main Pashupatinath temple on Monday. Every year in the month of Poush, there is a tradition to perform Dhanurmas puja (worship) at the main temple of Pashupatinath.
As it gets cold from Bala Chaturdashi onwards, it is a tradition to bathe Pashupatinath with hot water. There is also a tradition of offering Khichdi along with Dhanurmas Puja as it is believed to protect Pashupatinath from the cold. Dhanurmas Puja was held from 1 p.m. on Monday to 6 a.m. on Tuesday.
The temple was closed at 12 p.m. on Monday because it is believed that Pashupatinath fasts on Tuesday after Dhanurmas puja on Monday at night. There is a religious belief that on the day of fasting, Mahadev went to Shivapuri hill, and slept in the sun with mustard oil rubbed all over his body.
After the Dhanurmas puja, khichadi made from various beans is served to Pashupatinath. According to Revathiraman Adhikari, spokesperson of the Pashupati Area Development Fund, the temple will be closed from 12 p.m. today as Pashupatinath will be observed fasting on Tuesday after Dhanurmas puja throughout the night on Monday.
In this belief, aarti is performed with the belief that Pashupatinath will be smeared in mustard oil early in the morning and will return from Shivapuri hill in the evening after being warmed by the sun.
Gourishankar Parajuli, head of the culture preservation department of the fund, informed that there is a program of regular worship beginning Wednesday morning.
