The traditional Berkhenach has started to be shown in Beni, the capital of Myagdi. It is said that Berkhenach started with the settlement of Beni Bazar. This dance has continued in Beni, especially under the leadership of the Newar community. From Gantakarna Chartudarshi to the day of Hartalika Tij, this barkhe dance brings the joy of the festival here.
As part of Berkhenach, Lachenach started showing in Beni. According to the Nepali language Mankah Khalah, Lakhenach has been shown since the day of Nag Panchami. Berkhenach is shown under the leadership of Lam Puch, a group of young people under Mankakhal. This year lache, horse, bull, ropai, naganagini, paddy bala, and joginach will be shown.
Jaynesh Shrestha, president of Lam Puch, informed that even the dance that had been lost while being shown traditionally was preserved in Berkhenach. According to him, after more than a decade, in this year's Berkhenach, rice balanach is going to be shown.
Mankah Khalah has been training new artists for the continuation of the 200-year-old Berkhenach. Up to 40 artists participate in various dances. In a context where the original and Raithane cultures are disappearing due to the influence of modernity, the community here has kept Berkhenach alive.
Krishna Prasad Shrestha, President of Nepal Language Mankakhakhal: Myagdi, said that the awakening of youth has helped in the preservation and development of the dances of Berkhenach. He informed that efforts have been made to organize the youth by giving them the necessary training and counseling this year as well.
Although Berkhenach remains the cultural identity of the Newar community here, other communities have also started participating in its continuation and protection. In Berkhenach, dances are performed on the lakes of Mridringa and Madal. Most of the dances depict traditional society.
Especially in Lakhenach, the character of the wife of the demon after the killing of Gantakarna, who caused suffering and spread disorder in society in ancient times, is shown. Naganagini dance is a tradition that is performed for two days from the Janaipurnima festival throughout the year in memory of the deceased person. As part of Barkhenach, it is customary to conclude this dance with the message that truth will triumph over falsehood after Lord Krishna kills the demonic form Lakhe on the Tij day._Rss
