COVID-19 has thrust the world tourism and travel sector into chaos with the recovery still distant for many countries. But in the case of the small Southeastern Asian nation of Cambodia, its tourism sector has been projected to rebound in 2022 after two years of significant fall due to the pandemic.
Tourism is one of the most essential support in the Cambodian economy. In 2019, the nation was visited by 6.61 million tourists which made the country about 4.94 billion dollars. So its economy was hit hard when in 2020 only 1.3 million came to Cambodia. In addition to the 80 per cent fall in numbers, in 2021, the tourist count was only about 200,000, a further 85 per cent decrease in its numbers.
But finally, the clouds have started to fade with the country expecting about half a million tourists this year. Cambodia has gone quarantine-free for fully vaccinated members since November 2021 and has fully opened its doors after most of its population had been vaccinated against COVID-19.
