The World's Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has reported that its research in the tourism sector has shown that, with the revival and the recovery of the tourism sectors beginning, the tourism and travel industry will contribute $8.6 trillion this year with 58 million new jobs that the industry is projected to add.
In 2019, before the pandemic, this industry contributed about $9.2 trillion to the global economy. But the pandemic brought the sector down to its knees causing a 49% drop and a loss of $4.5 trillion in the global economy. WTTC research also shows that the travel and tourism sector's employment can reach 330 million people, just one per cent below the pandemic and a 22 per cent increase from 2020 with 58 million new jobs.
WTTC has clarified that these are projected results if the recovery of the sector and new policies continues to pick up at the current pace. With the vaccine and booster rollout accelerating all around the world, and many countries, slowly going from blanket restrictions to countries to a more individualistic person-by-person basis, WTTC has predicted near pre-pandemic levels of tourism and travel in 2022.
