In this meeting, the UNWTO secretary-general will meet the WHO director-general to discuss shared actions and priorities of the UN

The secretary-general of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) will visit Geneva this week for focused high-level talks on the restart of tourism. In this meeting, the UNWTO secretary-general will meet the WHO director-general to discuss shared actions and priorities of the UN.

The two UN agencies will discuss the need for the continuing easing of restrictions, having repeatedly warned against their ineffectiveness and the damage that arbitrary blanket restrictions have on the tourism industry.

With UNTWO realizing the importance of ties between key private sector firms and civil society partners, the UNWTO delegation is also scheduled to meet other high-profile figures from the director-general of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the chief executive of the Cruise Line International Association (CLIA) to strengthen ties between these private and public stakeholders.

In addition, the delegation would also meet the president of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) to discuss sports tourism as a driver of positive change while the ambassador of the Swiss State Secretariat of Economic Affairs (SECO), to discuss tourism policy in the wake of Switzerland announcing to significantly ease restrictions.

Also, for the first time, the UNWTO delegation will be addressing the UN press briefing at UN Geneva, providing an overview of the outcomes of the official visit and highlights on the tourism for development agenda for 2022.
