The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and World Health Organization have joined forces in calling out countries to lift travel bans as they do not provide any added benefits and value to the country and only contribute to more socio-economic issues.
In the press briefing in Geneva, both leaders of the organizations agreed on the importance of easing and lifting travel bans. They have both advised for blanket arbitrary restrictions to be replaced with risk-based, evidence-informed, context-specific policies.
The WHO's International Health Regulations (IHR) Emergency Committee on COVID-19 has also said that any restrictions and measures used against the pandemic should be based on the risk assessments of the individual including testing, isolation and vaccination.
Many countries have heeded these organizations' advice and have started to ease restrictions in their territory but they have underscored to continue opening up safely and to allow tourism to recover and deliver its potential as a driver of recovery and growth.
