On Friday, truck drivers and Britons travelling by ferry faced hours-long waits at the port of Dover. Authorities blamed French officials for the disruption, but France refuted this accusation.
Dover authorities said a lack of French border officials was causing up to six-hour waits for border checks at the English Channel port, with tourist and freight traffic blocking up roads for miles (kilometres).
With the commencement of the summer school holidays this weekend, millions of people in Britain are attempting to start their vacations but are encountering delays on the road, the sea, the rails, and the air.
“Despite months of collaboration between the two countries to prepare for peak travel season, the number of French border police has been insufficient and has fallen far short of what is required to ensure a smooth first weekend of the peak summer getaway period," according to port authorities in the United Kingdom.
But France denied that its border officials were unprepared.
