The country’s longest-serving monarch will be celebrated with military parades, hundreds of street parties, and a baking competition

Buckingham Palace on Monday unveiled the line-up of celebrations to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s 70 years on the British throne. The country’s longest-serving monarch will be celebrated with military parades, hundreds of street parties, and a baking competition.

On February 6, the queen will be the first-ever monarch to reach the platinum jubilee milestone. The commemoration of her historic contribution to the nation will begin with a series of events in the months to come.

To kick-start proceedings, the palace launched on Monday the ‘platinum pudding competition’ to find a “brand new pudding dedicated to the queen.” Other events such as the Queen’s Green Canopy, a plan to plant large numbers of “celebration trees” across the country will proceed in the months to come. The month of May will see some 500 horses and 1,000 performers on a show that Buckingham Palace says will “take the audience on a gallop through history.”

A four-day-long public holiday starting on June 2 is also a part of the commemoration. It will include the military parade to mark the queen’s birthday, a live concert at Buckingham Palace, and a service of thanksgiving. Along with this, numerous street parties have been planned. More than 200,000, say the palace. Pubs will likely be granted special licenses to stay open past the typical closing time. A procession called the River of Hope, made up of 200 silk flags decorated with images drawn by children, will make its way along with central London as a part of the Platinum Jubilee Pageant too.

However, the extent to which the queen herself will partake has not been clarified. Queen Elizabeth recently pulled out of a series of public engagements due to ill health.
