Heathrow Airport also recorded the lowest amount of passengers since 1972 with only 19.4 million people visiting the airport and being the only European hub to see a reduction in traffic last year

Heathrow Airport, seeing the travel restrictions and the quarantines measures, reported a loss of 2.5 billion dollars during 2021. In addition to this, Heathrow Airport also recorded the lowest amount of passengers since 1972 with only 19.4 million people visiting the airport and being the only European hub to see a reduction in traffic last year.

Cargo, which was mainly carried on empty passenger planes saw a decline of about 12 per cent from pre-pandemic levels.  Factoring this and last year's losses, it totals to nearly 5.2 billion dollars from the start of the pandemic.

But Heathrow sees the light at the end of the tunnel as normalcy comes and travel resumes and accelerates to pre-pandemic levels. They have seen demand start to recover in their markets and have planned to scale-up operations and reopen Terminal 4 for the summer travel peak. Heathrow expects about 45.5 million passengers this year, more than double from the pandemic but still well below pre-pandemic levels.
