Queen Elizabeth II, the longest ruling monarch in the history of Britain, passed away on Thursday at the age of 96 at Balmoral Castle her cherished summer home in Scotland.

She modernized and steadied the royal institution through seven decades of major societal changes during the reign of 15 prime ministers, from Winston Churchill to Liz Truss, through Britain’s postwar deprivation, crippling labor unrest and Brexit. She also endured through the messy divorces, embarrassments and scandals of her family as a reassuring anchor.

Through countless public events in her 70 years as monarch, Elizabeth likely met more people than anyone in history. Her image, on stamps, coins, and bank notes, was among the most imitated in the world. But most aspects regarding her inner life and opinions remained obscure. The public only got glimpses of her personality while she enjoyed watching horse racing at Royal Ascot or being with her beloved Welsh Corgi dogs.

World leaders paid tribute to her long reign. U.S. President Joe Biden baptized her a "stateswoman of unmatched dignity and constancy."

The impact of her loss will be colossal, for both the nation and for the monarchy. _AP
