Gansu Province in Northwest China has established a comprehensive digital image database to preserve the rare and precious rock paintings found at 72 cultural relic sites. The project, led by the Dunhuang Academy, involved collecting high-precision data and recording important information about the paintings and their surroundings.

These rock paintings, some dating back to the Stone Age, depict various scenes, including well-preserved animal figures and the ancient lifestyles of ethnic groups such as the Qiang people. The initiative aims to protect and preserve these invaluable cultural treasures and provide a foundation for future research, conservation, and utilization of the rock paintings in Gansu.
