Legend has it that in ancient times, a demon residing in the meadows, now Tundikhel, caused chaos in Kathmandu, especially targeting children. Upon the demon's demise, locals celebrated by dancing on his body and riding horses. It is believed that the horse parade held at Tundikhel on this day wards off the demon's spirit.

Additionally, the horse parade, also known as Aswa Yatra, holds religious significance as it is conducted to usher in the New Year, symbolizing new beginnings and prosperity for the community. This tradition showcases the rich cultural heritage and beliefs deeply rooted in Nepali society, making Ghode Jatra a cherished and vibrant festival in Kathmandu.
