Thailand announced on 7 January that it would be tightening some entry restrictions while expanding its ‘sandbox’ quarantine programme, which only served its tourism sector briefly. The programme required international visitors to remain in quarantine for only one day while awaiting results before venturing out. However, this scheme was scrapped late last year and now stricter regulations follow.
People have been asked to follow social distancing and follow mask regulations to contain the spread of COVID-19 fueled by the Omicron variant.
The government has not announced a lockdown, instead, issued alcohol consumption restrictions in restaurants. It is advised to avoid public gatherings, public transportation and unnecessary travel. Most schools will stay open, while nightlife will be hit hard, bars and nightclubs are to remain closed.
These restrictions were put in place after daily coronavirus cases doubled. The government reported 7,526 in just a matter of a few days following the new year's holiday and confirmed 19 new deaths.
The Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), said that its ‘test and go’ programme is indefinitely suspended. However, travellers who have already been approved under this scheme can still enter the country until January 15.
