A new trekking route to Tilicho Lake, the world’s highest lake at an altitude of 4,919 meters, has recently been opened in Manang district, offering trekkers a fresh way to reach this stunning destination. The new trail starts from Thini in Gharapjhong Rural Municipality-5, located in Jomsom, Mustang district. Previously, trekkers accessed the lake from Chame in Manang, passing through Khangsar.
According to Gharapjhong Rural Municipality Chairperson Mohan Singh Lalchan, domestic trekkers have already started using the new route, which winds through Thini, Namakhu Lake, the Nilgiri Icefall, Chema Tal, and Masokondo Pass. The footpath was established with the help of the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP), with Gharapjhong Rural Municipality investing Rs 5 million and ACAP contributing Rs 1 million.
Lalchan explained that trekkers can reach Tilicho Lake and return via this new route within two days. From Jomsom, the lake is just a two-hour drive followed by a six-hour trek along the new trail. However, trekkers should be prepared to bring their own food and camping gear, as there are no hotels or restaurants along the way.
Tula Buda Magar from Myagdi district, who recently completed the trek, described the experience as challenging but immensely rewarding. "It took me about an hour on foot from Masokondo Pass to the lake. The fatigue from the uphill journey disappeared the moment I laid eyes on the crystal-clear blue waters of Tilicho Lake," he said, reminiscing about the breathtaking panoramic view.
ACAP representative Pramod Raj Regmi added that the new trail is well-marked with informative signboards, ensuring a smoother trekking experience for adventurers seeking to explore this majestic high-altitude reservoir.
