Kathmandu, Nepal — In a significant step towards improving passenger safety and travel efficiency, a new luggage tag system is set to be introduced on long-distance public buses departing from the Kathmandu Valley from May 29, 2026.
The initiative has been developed through an agreement between the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office and the Federation of Nepalese National Transport Entrepreneurs, aiming to address long-standing concerns around baggage theft, loss, and mix-ups during intercity bus travel.
Under the new system, each piece of luggage will be issued a unique tag at the point of departure. Passengers will be required to retain a corresponding receipt, which must be presented upon arrival for baggage collection. Bus operators will release luggage only after verifying tag numbers against official travel records, introducing an airport-style layer of accountability to road transport.
Officials involved in the initiative state that the system is designed to enhance trust, improve operational discipline, and streamline luggage handling across busy intercity routes connecting Kathmandu with major destinations across Nepal.
By formalising baggage tracking procedures, authorities hope to significantly reduce disputes and improve the overall travel experience for thousands of daily passengers who rely on long-distance bus services.
The rollout marks one of the most structured attempts in recent years to modernise public transport logistics in Nepal, reflecting a broader push towards safer and more organised mobility systems.
