Announcement made on January 25 confirms 36 Covid positive cases

Kiribati, among the most remote and isolated island nations in the world, has gone into its first ever COVID-19 lockdown. The announcement was made after around 36 passengers to Kiribati on the first international flight (in 10 months) from Fiji tested positive for the infamous virus.

Until last week, the nation had recorded only two cases of Covid-19. The destination is an isolated island which had successfully remained COVID-free till now and never gone into lockdown. But, on January 25, the government of Kiribati confirmed that 36 of the 54 passengers were positive for the virus.

The government took to Facebook to make the announcement and said that all passengers are currently being monitored. The post also mentioned that all passengers onboard were fully vaccinated.

The lockdown means that residents won’t be allowed to leave their homes unless for essential services. People can go and buy essential items from shops only between 6 AM and 2 PM in the afternoon.

The office of President Taneti Maamau stated on Facebook, "The only way that we can fight this virus is through complete vaccination. The public is urged to complete their vaccination doses in order to protect themselves and families."
