The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has embarked on a project to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the city through the art of painting. In partnership with the Nepal Academy of Fine Arts, KMC has commenced the creation of artwork on public walls. A contract of understanding (MoU) was signed between KMC and the Academy on February 29, formalizing this collaboration.
Under the terms of the MoU, the Academy has been tasked with selecting artists and coordinating with relevant organizations for the project. The initial painting efforts are focused in the Sundhara area, with plans to extend to various other locations including the area of the Tripureshwor Stadium, Maitighar to Babarmahal, exhibition road, the international airport, Baneshwor, Minbhawan, Social Welfare Council, and Lainchour.
Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol has emphasized that priority will be given to artworks that reflect local cultural values. For instance, sports-themed artwork will adorn the stadium area, while depictions of Nepal's diverse ethnicities and traditional attire will be showcased at the international airport.
The paintings aim for originality, portraying elements such as traditional dances, costumes, musical instruments, and the cultural significance of events like Indra Jatra. KMC hopes that citizens will take responsibility for preserving these artworks, urging them not to deface the walls by touching, adding additional paint, hanging posters, or any other form of vandalism.
According to KMC, these paintings will serve as a tribute to the splendor of Kathmandu's rich heritage.
