Indrajatra, one of the most significant festivals celebrated in the Kathmandu Valley, kicks off today. This festival honors Indra, the revered deity of rain and prosperity, and is known as Yenya Punhi among the Newar community.
The celebration begins with the erection of a ceremonial pole bearing the Indra flag, or Indra dwaja, in front of Hanumandhoka in Basantapur. The festival spans eight days, filled with traditional dances, chariot processions, and the worship of various deities.
Beyond Kathmandu, Indrajatra is also observed in the districts of Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Dhulikhel, and Dolakha.
The main event of the festival falls on Tuesday, September 17, when the chariots carrying the images of Ganesha, Bhairav, and Kumari are paraded through the streets of Kathmandu. A special ceremony, attended by the Head of State and other dignitaries, will take place at Basantapur Durbar Square to witness the procession.
In recognition of the festival, the federal government has announced a public holiday in the Kathmandu Valley on Tuesday.
