With the data and the numbers in, the Hungarian Tourism Agency (MTU) has recorded a slight increase in tourism in the country with the establishment observing 11 per cent more nights spent by all tourists in the Eastern European country. But while the situation is recovering, it still has a long way to go to reach pre-pandemic levels and recover fully from the impact of the COVID-19.
The Central Statistical Office(KSH) under MTU has observed that there have been about 15 million tourism nights in-country in tourism and commercial accommodation establishments in 2021 which is about 11 per cent more than last year. Domestic tourists spent about 10.5 million and foreign tourists about 4.7 million tourists nights which is 5.9 per cent and 25 per cent more than last year respectively.
But in comparison to 2019 before the pandemic, the tourism night is still 35 per cent lowers in Hungarian hotels, boarding houses, campsites, holiday homes and other accommodation facilities. Tourism nights by foreign tourist is still down by a whopping 49 per cent of pre-pandemic levels.
But the MTU has projected that things will only get better from here. With the past few months showing promise of recovery with an increasing number of tourists (foreign and domestic) travelling the country and with Hungary hosting the European Handball Championship and the upcoming Swimming World Championship in June and the Sziget Music Festival in the summer of 2022, the MTU has predicted an increase in the recovery of travel and tourism in the country.
