According to the Dubai Department of Economy & Tourism (DET), Dubai has welcomed about 7.28 million international travellers last year which is a 32 per cent growth from the figure of 2020. Going into 2022, the government has vowed to use the current growth and revival of the tourism industry to accelerate its progress and reach in this year.
With the latest data, it can be seen that while Dubai has seen significant growth this year, it is far below 16.7 million international tourists that visited the Middle Eastern country before the pandemic. But in the fourth and final quarter of 2021, the nation observed over 3.4 million visitors which represents 74 per cent of the fourth quarter of 2019, showing the acceleration of growth and recovery in the travel, tourism and aviation industry.
The statistics have shown that most of the visitors to Dubai in 2021 have been from regional countries. 26 per cent of total tourists levels in the country has been from Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) and the Middle Eastern and North Africa (MENA) countries. This is followed by Western Europe with a 22 per cent share of total tourists visiting in the country. Eastern Europe contributed about 18 per cent of tourists with South Asia constituted 15 per cent of the travellers to UAE in 2021.
And with Dubai hosting Expo 2020 and UAE Golden Jubilee celebrations, Dubai has been positioned as a significant stakeholder in the recovery and revival of global tourism and aviation.
