The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) moved Canada to its highest risk category for travel on January 10. Being the world’s second-largest country by total area, Canada in recent days has seen a steep rise in cases. The Omicron variant spreads rampant, with 294,437 new cases recorded for the week ending January 8. These figures from John Hopkins University show its highest weekly total so far.
Along with Canada, the Caribbean island of Curaçao also moved to the CDC’s Level 4:Covid-19 Very High category on January 10. The Level 4 ban is placed when more than 500 cases per 100,000 residents are registered in the past 28 days. It is advised to avoid travel to these Level 4 countries.
Both these countries were at Level 3 last year, Canada since August 30 and Curaçao since November 22. Over 80 destinations are on this list; a few big names who remain at the CDC’s Level 4 are France, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
