In a remarkable journey spanning approximately 75 years, Active Women of Nepal (AWON), founded by American embassy ladies and expatriates residing in Nepal, continues its mission to uplift the less fortunate women and children of Nepal. AWON serves as a crucial bridge, fostering fellowship, understanding, and social networking between Nepali women and expatriates, as stated by AWON President Baba Sarkar Shrestha.
AWON's primary objective is to support educational, welfare, and healthcare initiatives, raising funds through various activities and events, including the highly anticipated AWON Bazaar. Scheduled for December 2nd, Saturday, 2023, at The Soaltee Kathmandu, the AWON Bazaar will feature a hundred vendors and a dedicated children's corner by Rupy's International School.
Spearheaded by AWON, FWEAN, and the ZONTA Club, the AWON Bazaar goes beyond commerce. It serves as a collection point for warm clothes, blankets, household essentials, and vital items for the victims of the recent earthquake in Jajarkot.
This event is not only an excellent opportunity for individuals and organizations to contribute to a noble cause but also plays a crucial role in connecting local vendors with the expatriate community, enhancing businesses, and promoting Nepali products, according to Baba Sarkar. The proceeds from the AWON Bazaar will be used to purchase warm clothes, blankets, and sanitary pads for distribution in the affected villages.
AWON's history is marked by impactful initiatives, including providing scholarships, stationery, and uniforms for 80 children in various government schools, distributing blankets and warm clothes to 380 families in Kalaiya, Bara district (January 2023), donating essential items to flood victims in Sindhupalchok (October 2022), providing free meals during the COVID lockdown (June 2021), and offering free PCR tests and hygiene packs in various regions.
The AWON Bazaar will kick off at 9 a.m. and continue until 6 p.m., with Honorary President Madam Jane Krill Thompson inaugurating the event at 10.30 a.m. It stands as a testament to AWON's enduring commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of those in need, fostering community connections, and creating lasting change.
