The Yamadeepdan, or the offering of lamps to Yamadeva, marks the beginning of this year’s Tihar celebration on Saturday, October 22 (the deity of death). According to tradition, celebrating Yamadeepandan will shi7eld the devotee from an untimely demise.
Sisters and brothers exchange the Saptarangi tika (seven-colored tika) on October 27 in observance of the Tihar holiday this year. Sisters decorate their brothers with tika, wishing them health and longevity and they also give them special Tihar treats. In exchange, boys offer their sisters presents and the Tika. On the same day, the Newar community celebrates Kija Puja (Bhai Tika)
“Dhantrayodashi (Dhantera) should also be observed on the same day. The Kag Tihar, the festival of crow, falls on October 23 and the Laxmi Puja (worship of Hindu Goddess Laxmi), one of the major celebrations of the Tihar Festival, falls on Monday, October 24,” said Committee Executive Director Surya Prasad Dhungel.
