A team of Sherpa climbers, including a renowned mountaineer from the Sangkhuwasabha district, achieved the season's first summit of Mt. Makalu, surpassing 8,000 meters on Thursday. Mingma Sherpa, the Chairman of Seven Summit Treks, disclosed that the group, led by Lakpa Sherpa, reached the mountain's peak around 4:40 pm.
Lakpa Sherpa, an esteemed mountain guide from Seven Summit Treks and 14 Peaks Expedition, led the team of eight rope-fixing members to conquer the 8485-meter peak. This marked Lakpa's eighth successful ascent of Makalu, a notable accomplishment. In 2022, Lakpa gained widespread recognition for his feat of summiting Mt. Makalu thrice in 16 days, establishing himself as the sole climber to achieve the most ascents of 8485-meter peaks within a single season. Additionally, Lakpa has scaled Manaslu four times, Ama Dablam six times, Lhotse twice, Cho Oyu twice, and Mt. Everest once.
According to the Department of Tourism, a total of 45 foreign climbers from four different teams have obtained climbing permits for Makalu so far.
