Already with the most restrictive quarantine policies in Asia, Hong Kong has stepped up its measures against the Omicron variant by prohibiting flights from UK, US, Australia, Canada, France, India, Pakistan and the Philippines. Under the "zero-COVID" strategy followed by Hong Kong, it has been another step in the escalation of quarantine policies to rid itself from COVID-19.

This measure has been in addition to the two dozen individual routes that has been suspeneded in less than six weeks by the government. While Hong Kong chief executive, Carrie Lam has wanred of a "silent transmission" in Hong Kong and the draconian measures have kept the city mostly virus-free, it still is being criticised by many in and out of the country.

While the government has announced that this ban will only last until the January 20, Cathay Pacific and other carriers have announced that these measures will cause "dramatic" supply chain disruptions and may affect Hong Kong's status as a "leading cargo hub."
