Berkhe Nach, a 300-year-old historical tradition of Beni, Myagdi, started with locals revelling in the festival.

A long-run tradition, it is believed that the Newar community, who came from Bhaktapur and settled in Beni in the 1760s, started Berke Nach in the district.

This month-long event is said to be a celebration of the death of a demon—Gantakarna—otherwise known as Khalpatra.

On Tuesday, a three-legged monster statue representing Gantakarna was carried around the market from Sangam Chowk and submerged in the Kaligandaki River to commemorate the demon’s death.

Lakhe Nach, Ropai Nach, Ghoda Nach, Nag Nagini Nach, Shri Krishna and Rathyatra, Hanuman Nach, etc., are all included in Barkhenach.

The Saparu or Naga-nagini dance is traditionally performed as part of Berkhenach as well. This is done on Janai Purnima by families in the memory of their deceased family members.

According to Krishna Prasad Shrestha, President of the Nepal Language Manka: Khal, specific dances, including the Hanuman dance and Ropai, have been discontinued as no one at present knows how to perform them. _Rss
