Gyan Maharjan, a world cyclist and climate campaigner, promotes Nepal's tourism and culture globally through his extensive cycling tours and sustainable travel initiatives

Gyan Maharjan is a world cyclist and climate campaigner. More than a decade ago, he was a teacher, and after teaching for several years, he decided to travel the world to better understand the lifestyles of people globally. In 2013, he began his world cycling tour after obtaining visas for five countries. He commenced his journey from mainland China, including a visit to the Great Wall of China. To date, he has traveled to 22 countries across the Asian and European continents.

How do your cycling experiences contribute to global tourism, especially in promoting tourism in Nepal?

Nepal is a unique country with ample opportunities in the tourism sector. I explore and share the beauty of Nepal's nature on the international stage while cycling around the world. My clear plan is to conduct a mini cycle rally in each city I visit, inviting local cyclists from those respective countries to participate. This gives me an opportunity to learn about their culture and country, but more importantly, it allows me to share the culture, traditions, and beauty of Nepal.

Additionally, I am always eager to collaborate with the Nepalese Embassy in each country. Through these sessions, I can further share the potential aspects of tourism in Nepal with the participants.

What keeps you entertained, motivated, and refreshed during your travels?

I feel incredibly fortunate to promote and share my country with people from all over the world, which keeps me motivated. I am overwhelmed and proud whenever I get to describe the beauty of Nepal. I feel excited when listeners are curious to hear more about my country and my experiences. I can happily talk about Nepal for hours.

From your perspective, what is the best thing to do in Nepal that you would suggest to a tourist or visitor?

To increase the number of tourists in Nepal, the government must improve transportation facilities, making travel easy and hassle-free. The government should create policies regarding fees and offer incentives to attract tourists. Campaigns should be planned to draw tourists to the country. Additionally, proper health facilities, security, and accommodation should be provided for tourists. These aspects need serious attention.

Could you share one of your most memorable experiences from your cycling adventures?

One of my most memorable experiences was when I departed from Daegu, the third biggest city of South Korea. I started my journey at dawn and cycled until dusk, with no breaks in between. It was a long distance, and I didn’t stop even for a second, not even for lunch or breakfast. After hours of cycling, I finally reached my destination, the vibrant city Daegu. It was my toughest and most memorable 16-hour long cycling journey.

In your opinion, how can cyclists and other travelers contribute to sustainable tourism?

Sustainable tourism is crucial, especially with the growing issue of climate change. Cycling is a means of zero carbon emission, and by practicing it, we cyclists contribute to environmental balance. I urge all tourists and travelers to practice sustainable tourism in their journeys.

What are your future plans and aspirations as a world cyclist? Are there any specific destinations you are looking forward to exploring next?

I am continuously on my world cycling tour, and I not only cycle but also share about Nepal worldwide. After gaining experiences from 22 countries across Asia and Europe, I plan to explore the Oceanic countries next and then head to the Caribbean. In essence, I am exploring the world from east to west.

Is there anything else you would like to share about your experiences, thoughts on tourism, or advice for aspiring travelers and cyclists?

I urge the government and concerned authorities to spread the message of Nepal's tourism strength globally. Aspiring travelers and cyclists should focus on sustainable tourism and promote environmental balance in their travels.
