Ghadiarwa Pokhari, tucked away in the vibrant city of Birgunj, is a captivating historical and religious site, drawing visitors from far and wide. The fascinating allure of Ghadiarwa Pokhari is one where spirituality, natural beauty, and cultural festivities converge.

A Historical and Spiritual Hub

Ghadiarwa Pokhari boasts a rich historical significance that was officially recognized when it was inaugurated by the late King Birendra Shah in 1999 AD (2056 BS). What was once a simple pond has now become a renowned religious and tourist destination. The Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation has included Ghadiarwa Pokhari among the 100 new tourist destinations, acknowledging its strong potential for tourism.

The centerpiece of this enchanting site is the Sun Temple, adorned with the largest sun statue in South Asia. Nestled at the corner of the pond, this temple also houses a Ganga statue, adding to its religious significance. Witness the divine spectacle of the evening Arati, akin to the grandeur of Janakpur and Ganga Sagar, which has been held here for the past three years.

A Natural Haven

Ghadiarwa Pokhari not only captivates with its spiritual charm but also mesmerizes with its natural beauty. Embraced by tall trees and buildings, this serene pond offers respite from the clamor of modern cities. Here, visitors can immerse themselves in the tranquility of nature, taking leisurely walks along the water's edge and indulging in moments of relaxation. The pond's chilly waters are believed to wash away worries and pain, offering a soothing retreat for all who seek solace.

A Cultural Extravaganza

The Birgunj Sub-Metropolitan Municipality has taken great care to design Ghadiarwa Pond, particularly to facilitate those observing fasts, especially during the Chhath festival. The pond premises host a vibrant fair during the Chhath festival, attracting throngs of devotees and visitors alike. The Sun Temple holds a prominent place during this auspicious occasion, adorned with statues of the Sun God and Ganga Mata, allowing devotees to pay homage to these revered deities.

From Kartik Shukla Chaturthi to Saptami, Ghadiarwa Pokhari adorns itself like a radiant bride. As Dashain, the major festival of Nepal, concludes, locals and dedicated workers embellish the Chhath Ghat of the pond with dazzling pavilions, tents, electric lights, melodious sounds, and vibrant flowers. The third day of Chhath witnesses a grand spectacle as devotees fast for 48 hours and conclude their devotion by worshiping and adorning the Sun God from the sacred grounds of Ghadiarwa Pokhari. Undoubtedly, this pond has been revered as an important religious site since ancient times.

A Mecca for Travellers

Ghadiarwa Pokhari has become a must-visit destination for travelers exploring Nepal. With an entry fee of RS 25, around 500 visitors grace the pond daily, including tourists from major cities like Kathmandu, Janakpur, Biratnagar, Chitwan, Nawalparasi, and Makwanpur. Its proximity to the Indian border has also made it a center of attraction for Indian tourists, particularly from cities like Raxaul.
