From the tragic tale that gave it its name to the awe-inspiring beauty of the cascading water and the hidden caves, this place held a charm unlike any other

As I stood before the mesmerizing sight of Devi's Falls in Pokhara, I couldn't help but feel intrigued by the captivating story behind its name. It all began on a fateful afternoon on July 31, 1961, when a Swiss lady named Mrs. Devis met a tragic fate. While enjoying a bath with her husband beside Fewa Lake, an unexpected flood swept her away, forever leaving an imprint on this place. Henceforth, it became known as Devi's Falls, a powerful reminder of the forces of nature.

As I observed the waterfall, I marveled at the swift-moving river cascading down the narrow canyon, disappearing into the depths of the earth. This unique phenomenon earned it the local name "Patale Chango," or an underground waterfall in Nepali. The water tumbled about 500 feet through a natural tunnel hidden 100 feet beneath the ground. It flowed through the mystical Gupteshwor Mahadev cave, weaving its way through a series of captivating underground chambers.

Adjacent to the falls, I discovered the intriguing Mahendra Cave. It was a fascinating experience to explore the dark recesses of the cave, marveling at the formations created by time and nature. Just a stone's throw away, I found myself immersed in the lively atmosphere surrounding Devi's Falls. Visitors tried their luck at the luck pond, tossing coins onto the statue of a deity, hoping for blessings and good fortune. I couldn't resist capturing the essence of traditional Nepali life, posing alongside the models of typical Nepali houses and the statues of locals dressed in traditional attire.

To reach this bustling street, home to handicraft markets and other attractions, I opted for a local bus from the city center. The journey was an opportunity to witness the daily life of the locals and interact with their warm hospitality. However, if time was of the essence, taking a taxi was a more convenient option.

They say the best time to witness the true magnificence of Devi's Falls is during the monsoon season. As the rain pours relentlessly, the waterfall transforms into a thundering spectacle, with water crashing over rocks and plunging through the gorges. It is during this time that nature's power is on full display, leaving visitors in awe of its grandeur.

What struck me the most about Devi's Falls was the enigmatic starting point of the waterfall. The Pardi Khola stream gracefully made its way to the surface, only to vanish mysteriously into the underground realm. As I stood there, I could hear the powerful sound of the water as it collided with the falls, creating a symphony of nature's elements. It was no wonder that Devi's Falls had become one of the must-visit tourist attractions in Pokhara.

Visiting Devi's Falls was an experience that left an indelible mark on me. From the tragic tale that gave it its name to the awe-inspiring beauty of the cascading water and the hidden caves, this place held a charm unlike any other. If you ever find yourself in Pokhara, don't miss the chance to witness the grandeur of Devi's Falls. It's a journey that will take you to the heart of nature's wonders and leave you with memories to cherish.
